Central Government Securities
G-Secs and Treasury Bills are direct obligations of the Government of India and need no credit rating.
Why SDLs Yield More
SDLs are issued by State Governments through RBI auctions. They usually yield more than central G-Secs because they trade less often.

Sovereign Debt & G-Sec Board FAQs
4 topicsWhat are Government of India Dated Securities (G-Secs)?
G-Secs are long-term debt instruments issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on behalf of the Government of India to fund public expenditure. They are obligations of the Government of India and pay fixed semi-annual coupon interest across maturities ranging from 2 years up to 40 years.
How do Treasury Bills (T-Bills) work?
Treasury Bills are short-term zero-coupon debt obligations issued by the Central Government in three standard maturities: 91 days, 182 days, and 364 days. They do not pay periodic coupon interest; instead, they are issued at a discount to face value and redeemed at par (₹100), with the difference representing the investor’s return.
What are State Development Loans (SDLs) and why do they offer a spread over G-Secs?
State Development Loans (SDLs) are debt securities issued by individual State Governments to finance development programs. They usually yield more than Central G-Secs because they trade less often and state finances vary.
How does retail trading in G-Secs work on Indian exchanges?
Retail investors can buy and sell G-Secs and T-Bills directly on the NSE and BSE cash debt market segments via standard demat accounts, or bid in primary auctions without commission through RBI Retail Direct.
